A study conducted by Ian Caterson compared commercial weight-loss programs with programs that you get from the doctor or nurse. The study included obese adults from Australia, Germany, and United Kingdom. The results showed that people who joined commercial weight-loss programs lost an average of 5.06 kilograms. The people who received standard care lost an average of 2.25 kilograms.

Volunteers who followed a weight-loss program for a year lost twice as much weight as those who tapped their GP for advice. They also shed more fat mass, had slimmer waists, and greater improvements in insulin and cholesterol levels.

“The greater level of contact, the more frequent opportunities to be weighed, the peer support, and the access to information and resources such as recipes than those in the Weight Watchers program had could have been significant factors,” said Professor Caterson.
